Best Time to Visit
- July and August: the warmest air and water, and the busiest beach. Expect afternoon sea breezes that keep the shore a little cooler than inland Fairfield County.
- June and September: highs in the upper 70s, fewer people, and the weekly water quality report still running until Labor Day.
- October: highs in the mid-60s, migrating birds, dogs allowed again from October 1, and the whole beach open to fishing.
- Winter: the park stays open 8 a.m. to sunset. February averages about 10.7 inches of snow at Bridgeport; the shore often gets less than inland towns, and a cold wind off the Sound is the bigger factor.
Live Forecast
Use the National Weather Service forecast for Westport, CT (forecast.weather.gov) for hourly temperature, wind and rain chances, plus any marine, heat or coastal flood advisories. On beach days, check wind direction: a south wind brings chop to the beach and spray over the jetties.
Wind and Kites
The open lawns and beaches are known for kite flying, and an onshore breeze is common on summer afternoons. Bring a light kite for summer and a stronger one for fall.

Planning Around Heat and Crowds
The hottest stretch, late July into August, is also the park's busiest, and the lots can fill on weekends. On a heat-advisory day, arrive when the gates open at 8 a.m., use the shade of the west-side picnic grove, and bring more water than you think: the pavilion snack bar is closed for 2026. Thunderstorms build on hot afternoons; leave the beach at the first thunder. After heavy rain, check the water quality report before swimming.
